Meyers Funeral Home

The Meyers family became involved in the funeral business in the early 1900's. Mr. Ed Zier ran a funeral home in Batesville from his residence on North Park Street. He called upon Walter Meyers, Rodger's Grandfather, for the use of his horses and wagon to carry the caskets for funerals. Walter, then a farmer, decided to attend mortuary school to earn his license. Walter and his wife Lillie then began their own funeral business from their home on Columbus Ave. Over time, funeral customs began to change. Families preferred to have the services and visitation at the local funeral home, rather than their own residences. In the late 1930's, to get more room to accommodate these changes, Walter moved the business to his mother's house at 500 West Pearl Street. Walter & Lillie's son, Nelson G. Meyers, graduated from mortuary school in 1949. Nelson and his wife, Margaret, continued to operate the funeral home while living upstairs and raising their family. After a tour of duty in the Navy from 1977-1980, Rodger graduated from Mid America College of Funeral Service in Louisville, KY in 1984 and joined his father. When Nelson retired in the early 1990's, Rodger took over the funeral home. Today, both Rodger and his wife Taaron are actively involved in the business, making many enhancements to improve the level of service to bereaved families. Over the years the building itself at 500 West Pearl has changed as well, but one thing remains the same, it is still a highly respected, friendly, family owned funeral home based on Batesville history and pride.
